The Challenge
In October 2024, I took over social media management for The Matinee, Akron's premier underground music venue.
The venue had a modest but loyal following with limited reach outside Highland Square. Before I took over, The Matinee averaged:
Under 1,000 profile visits per month
Under 2,000 monthly reach
No sustainable growth pattern
Content limited to show announcements
The venue needed to become a regional brand, not just a local spot. They needed foot traffic from across Northeast Ohio, not just the neighborhood.
The Strategy
I transformed The Matinee's social platforms into drivers of community identity, brand awareness, and foot traffic. Every post followed direct-response principles: build desire, create urgency, drive action.
Key strategic shifts:
Consistent posting schedule: Daily content instead of sporadic announcements
Content diversification: Beyond show announcements to food, bartender features, and venue personality
Community partnerships: Collaborated with bands, artists, and local personalities
Personality-driven content: Featured bartenders and regulars to build connection
Visual storytelling: Focused on what makes a dive bar feel like home
The Breakthrough
The Matinee opened a kitchen in early 2025. I immediately pivoted content strategy to include food alongside music coverage. Combined with personality-driven bartender content, this diversity drove viral exposure.
April 2025: The Viral Tipping Point
One video changed everything. A bartender making Hurricane Shots went viral, pulling in millions of views overnight.
2.9M Views
+5,000% increase
32,300 Visits
+1,500% increase
2.9M Reach
+13,000% increase
But this wasn't luck. The viral moment happened because we had already built a foundation of daily posting, diverse content, and community connection. When the algorithm picked up the Hurricane Shot video, we had the infrastructure to capitalize on it.
12-Month Results (October 2024 - September 2025)
Peak reach: 1.6 million (April 2025)
Peak views: 2.9 million in one month
Peak visits: 32,300 profile visits (from 713)
Follower growth: 1,300 new followers in April alone
Sustained baseline: 200K-300K monthly views post-viral
Brand recognition: Established The Matinee as a recognizable regional destination
Sustainable engagement: Built diversified content that maintains interest beyond show announcements
Key Catalysts
Viral Hurricane Shot video, kitchen expansion creating food content opportunities, bartender personality features, consistent daily posting, and strategic community partnerships.
What This Means for Your Venue
You don't need a viral video to grow your reach. You need consistent content that makes people care about your venue beyond what band is playing Friday.
The Matinee grew because we stopped treating social media like a bulletin board and started treating it like brand-building. Show announcements still happened. But so did stories, personalities, and content that made people feel like they belonged.
If you're a hospitality venue stuck at 2,000 monthly reach, you're not posting enough, you're not diversifying content, or you're not building connection beyond transactions.
